The medical field has developed significantly in the last century. There have been innovations and developments on several medical equipments that have been saving millions of lives. One of the finest innovations in the medical field is the surgical instruments. There are different types of surgical instruments used for surgeries and for clinical procedures. In this article, we will look in to the different types of surgical instruments used in modern hospitals and clinics for treatment procedures.

The surgical instruments are tools designed to perform specific actions during an operation or surgical treatment procedures. It can be used to modify a particular tissue, or cut skin in order to operate the inner parts etc. It was in the ninetieth century, several instruments were invented in many parts of the world. These tools have helped physicians and surgeons to perform surgeries on their patients.

Today, several types of surgical instruments are used in the medical field. Few of them are used for general purpose while remaining is used for specific treatment procedures. The medical equipments used in the industry have lot of roles in the operation theatres. As mentioned, most of the tools are used for specific operations. These very sensitive medical equipments are to be used carefully. This is the why they are used by trained physicians and doctors.

The classification of these medical equipments depends on certain patterns. For instance, the names of the medical tools reflect its operational use while names of certain tools are given after their inventors. These are how these medical equipments are classified in the medical industry. Precisely, the surgical instruments aid surgeons and technologist to perform respective surgeries and medical operations.

There are several types and classes of surgical instruments. Let us look at the most commonly used tools and their uses in medical industry.

• Retractors: It is a common class of surgical equipments used to cut open the skin. The tools in this class of medical equipments are also used to spread open tissues and ribs during surgical procedures.
• Mechanical Cutters: These types of surgical equipments are used to cut skin and bones during surgeries. Scalpels, ligasure, rasps, lancets, tracers are few of the mechanical cutters used in today’s modern medical operations.
• Specula and Dilators: These tools are used to find access to incisions or narrow passages.
• Powered Medical Equipments in Surgical Treatments: There are few powered equipments used in surgical operations such as dermatomes, drills, etc.
• Measurement Equipments: The measurement equipments are used to measure sizes of various parts or tumors in the body. The measuring devices used during operations are calipers and rulers. This tool assists surgeons to find the exact measurement of the condition.
• Cryotomes, ultrasound tissue disruptors and cutting lasers together forms a class of medical equipments.

Here are few more surgical instruments used in modern surgeries and operations.
• Graspers
• Occuluders and clamps
• Stereotactic devices, positioners and distracters
• Suction tubes
• Optical carriers and electromechanical equipments
• Tyndallers

All these tools are used for specific surgical procedures. They assist surgeons in completing the respective procedures successfully.

Radiology helps the doctors to detect the diseases. It helps to provide 3-d images of the organ which is ill.

Doctors are helpful for the Radiology which provides 3-d and 4-d images of the body organ which is ill. Radiology is used for the diagnosis and the treatment of the body organ where the disease is. It provides the image of the human body parts inside the human body. It has a lot of imaging technologies. For example x-ray radiography, computed tomography, ultrasound, positron emission tomography, nuclear medicine etc.

It uses magnetic resonance imaging for the diagnosis or the treatment of the diseases. There is interventional radiology which has the performance of the medical system and it is minimally invasive. The task of achievement of the medical imaging is performed by the help of the radiographer. It is also done by the help of radiologic technologist. There are many imaging modalities which are used for the diagnostic radiology.

Actually radiographs are made by the transmission of the X-rays. The rays are captured on a device and then it is converted to the image for the purpose of the diagnosis. Impregnated films of the silver are produced by the original and the still and the common imaging. There is radiography of the film screen an x-tube is there. It produces x-ray beams which are targeted to the patient. The x-rays are filtered while passing through the patients. It reduces scatter and the noise and then it falls on a film which is undeveloped.

It can keep tight to a screen which contains phosphors. There are light emitting phosphors. It works on a cassette which is light-tight. The film is developed by a chemical reaction and an image is produced. Nowadays digital photography is there instead of film-screen radiography. X-rays falls on a sensors plate. It converts the signals which are produced in the digital information and it produces and image on the computer screen. In the first 50 years of the radiology plain radiology was there to make the images. It was the only mode in that time.

Lee Bond is a renowned radiology expert who has over 10 years of experience in the field, and another 10 as a regular surgeon. For more information, please visit Radiology.

Medical assistants were introduced to reduce the work load of physicians. Nowadays they are trained to perform both clinical and office duties. When a patient is admitted to a hospital, Medical assistant (MA) will prepare his file of medical history, so when the physician comes to examine the patient, he can start the treatment. These assistants also explain the procedure of treatment to the patient. It is also his duty to prepare the patients for x-rays and ultrasounds. They also check and keep record of patient’s blood pressure, pulse rate, body temperature and respiratory system.

Medical assistants also take care of the office work; they keep the record of the appointments and often call the patients to confirm the appointments. It is the duty of MA to greet the patients, help them with admission procedures of hospital, filling the insurance form and other basic procedures. They also tell the patient about expenses of treatment and receive the payments, but only in some private clinics. There are also some specialized assistants like ophthalmic; these specialized assistants have taken special training to assist a specialized doctor. In this case of ophthalmic assistants, they perform diagnostic test, measure and keep the record of vision and checks the function of eye muscles. They also apply eye dressing and also explain the patient about the procedure of wearing and taking care of lenses.

There is no special requirement for becoming a medical assistant, one thing that is necessary is a high school diploma. It is advised that you check the accreditation of the institute before taking admission in it. Medical office assistants interact with a lot of people during work so their personality should also be well-groomed. Many medical assistants who are currently working, do not have any special qualification and they have learnt their duties on the job, but now most of the employer only gives job to a certified medical assistant. There is a one year diploma and a 2 year associate degree offered by various schools and colleges. These courses usually cover physiology, anatomy, medical terminology, keyboarding, transcription, record keeping, accounting and insurance processing. Most of the programs also include internship programs so that the students can also gain some practical experience of their profession. It is not necessary for one to have a certification but certified medical assistants are always preferred over non certified assistants. The two popular associations for issuing the certification of medical assistants are American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) and Association of medical Technologists (AMT). People can also get their specialized certification such as podiatry, optometry and ophthalmology.

If we talk about the job opportunities of the certified medical assistants, it is predicted that it would be the fastest growing occupation of this decade. There were about 540,020 jobs in 2011 and it is expected to grow by 35 % in 10 years. This means that one can have a very bright future in this field after getting some certification and degree. They usually earn from 25,000 and up to 40,000 dollars, depending upon the experience, certification and the size of the organization you are working in.

A lucrative and challenging career can be obtained by attending a radiology school. Programs in radiography generally last from 22-24 months and are fascinating to anyone interested in the human anatomy. Advanced courses may be up to four years long and lead to a bachelors or associate degree in radiography.

Radiography, otherwise known as radiology is the diagnostic imaging of various parts of the anatomy, using a variety of different techniques and devices. Radiography schools offer courses that specialize in various techniques such as CT scanning (Computerized tomography) and MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging). Those individuals who want to specialize in a field can take a 1-year certificate program on top of their radiography diploma.

During the basic course, students will learn the basics of radiography. These basics include anatomy and physiology, patient management, imaging processes, radiation protection, radiobiology, pathology and radiation physics. Technical skills and radiation protection are two big factors that are emphasized throughout the course.

A radiology student will learn the necessary skills to prepare patients for x-rays and the correct positioning of the patient, application of non-radioactive materials and explaining the various processes to patients. Industrial radiologists will learn skills necessary to work in the fields of archeology, security, food inspection and more.

On completion of the course, the new graduate will be registered as a Radiographer or Radiological Technologist and will then be able to find employment in doctors offices, clinics, and hospitals or for a mobile x-ray company. Fields of medical imaging also include pediatric, trauma or surgical radiography, ultrasound, mammography, angiography and fluoroscopy.

Radiographers that have received advanced degrees from radiography programs are able to work in the fields of medical sales and marketing, education and hospital management.

Demand for Radiologists Radiologists are currently at a crossroads. On the one hand demand is increasing while at the same time reimbursements are being cut.

Demand for Radiologists

Radiologists are currently at a crossroads. On the one hand demand is increasing while at the same time reimbursements are being cut. The new Obama health care policy should increase the total number of patients for all specialties, but will it also make further cuts in reimbursement rates to pay for extending these services?

While the current health care policy should raise enrollment rates, this push for demand for services should also raise costs. One way the government hopes to control possible cost increases will be to Medicare cut reimbursement rates. As all insurance payments to physicians are based on Medicare rates any cuts by them will ripple though the industry. This has already been happening to some extent the last few years for Radiologists.

Another way costs may improve is new technologies may be developed that will help Radiologists work in a more efficient, cost effective manner. One thing is certain and that is the aging population will cause the long-term demand for the services of radiologists to increase in the future.

Radiology can be surmised as the research and implementation of imaging technology, such as x-ray devices and radiation in diagnostic and applicable uses to treat an array of maladies. Ultrasounds, nuclear medicine, PETs (positron emission tomography), MRIs (Magnetic resonance imaging), and computed tomography are a few of the technologies used.

Definitions of aforesaid technologies:

Projection Radiology: Projectional radiography or plain film radiography is the method of making 2-D images with x-ray radiation.

Fluoroscopy: Fluoroscopy is an imaging method commonly used by physicians to get actual-time moving images of the interior structure of a patient with the use of a fluoroscope.

Computer Tomography (C T)/ Computer Axiated Tomography (CAT): CT or CAT scans are special x-ray tests that produce cross-sectional images of the body using x-rays and a computer.

Ultrasound: Ultrasound is cyclic sound pressure with a frequency greater than the upper limit of human hearing. The most well known application of ultrasound is its use in sonography to produce pictures of fetuses in the human womb.

MRI: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or nuclear magnetic resonance imaging (NMRI), is primarily a medical imaging technique most commonly used in radiology to visualize detailed internal structure and limited function of the body. It is especially helpful when used to monitor and diagnose neurological disorders.

Nuclear Medicine: In nuclear medicine imaging, radiopharmaceuticals are taken internally, for example intravenously or orally. Then, external detectors (gamma cameras) capture and form images from the radiation emitted by the radiopharmaceuticals.

One practice used in the field of radiology is Teleradiology. Teleradiology is where the results of various methods listed above are sent to a radiologist at a different location, usually during that radiologists office hours. It is advantageously effective when applied to rural or underserved clinics and hospitals, where a radiologist might not be available at the time or at all, and nights and weekends.

Radiology currently is a very competitive medical specialty. A radiologist goes through a minimum of thirteen years of post-secondary education. The breakdown of that amount of time is as follows. Four years are spent obtaining a bachelors degree, usually in pre-medicine or biology. After that, the student must complete either of two medical degrees: Doctorate of Osteopathy (D. O.) or Doctorate of Allopathic Medicine (M. D.) medicine. There aren’t many practical differences between these two certifications besides varying intensities of focus areas, but nonetheless they are regarded as equivalent certifications. This training takes approximately four years. After an M. D. or D. O. is received, an Internal Medicine or Surgery specialization may be beneficial, and required by some schools, which could add 3-7 years, depending on the pre-specialty. The radiology specialization itself takes roughly 5 years to complete. Cumulatively, a radiologist could be in post-secondary school for up to 20 years.

Radiology & How Its Changing

Radiology was once one of the most sought after and competitively salaried specialties in the medical field. Today however, due to health care reform, population ages shifting, and employment market saturations and deficits, radiologists are on unsteady ground. The worst case scenario is that Radiology demand will stay high and steady, but salaries will fall. This seems to be what’s happening now, but the circumstances surrounding it are too volatile to make any definitive predictions.

Did you know that an ultrasound scan is one of the safest and most economical means of monitoring your health? This article will provide you with all the information that you need about this non-invasive procedure so that you can make use of this method in caring for your wellbeing.

In order to complete this method, an instrument called a sonography machine is needed. This medical equipment transmits high frequency waves through the stomach so as to see the organs inside the body. Videos and images can then be recorded so that a more detailed diagnosis can be made to identify the problem that a particular patient has.

If an ultrasound test is being requested by a pregnant woman, then there are 3 options to choose from. The procedure can be 4D, 3D or 2D although the 2D scans are no longer being employed much these days because of its limiting features. The 4D scan is the most advanced type of ultrasound today as it can even record the baby’s movements and body features clearly. The 3D scan on the other hand is best used to look into the internal organs of the baby to make sure that the child is growing normally. Through these methods, abnormalities such as having a cleft lip as well as monitoring a baby’s internal organs can be properly analyzed.

Keep in mind, however, that an ultrasound is not only useful for pregnancy. This same method is also being employed to diagnose other problems along the abdominal area as it can also check on the condition of the bladder, liver, uterus and ovary. So those patients who are suffering from pelvic pain, heavy menstruation or internal bleeding can also benefit from this method. Pelvic masses as well as ovarian cysts can be easily detected through this procedure and further medication can therefore be applied to remedy the situation.

There are many advantages to using this system of looking into the internal organs of the body. As this only involves scanning, the procedure is painless, fast and non-invasive. Furthermore, an ultrasound machine doesn’t emit radiation like an X-ray machine thus making the instrument extremely safe not only for the mommy but the baby as well. And if you compare it with other medical procedures today, you will also find that the price for this method is very reasonable.

Indeed, a regular ultrasound scan during medical check up can help in saving lives. This is an affordable means to monitor one’s health as an early detection of any illness can make a huge difference in its treatment. This modern medical diagnostic test can also aid in monitoring a baby’s condition inside the womb to ensure proper growth and development.

Today, digital imaging systems are used by doctors across the world to detect and treat diseases. These systems help in the accurate study of maladies and thus help in the correct treatment and speedy recovery of the patient.

With the tremendous leaps that the medical field makes each year it is evident that a lot of medical diagnoses and treatments are going to be made easier and faster in future. For several of its feats in fighting diseases, medical field owes to technology. Digital imaging system is one such result of the use of technology in medical field. It is the creation of detailed and descriptive images of body parts and internal organs for medical diagnosis, analysis and treatment.

Today medical imaging has become an important part of medicine and clinical practices. In fact, in medical institutions, this has become one of the major sub-disciplines for courses like biomedical engineering, medical physics or even general medicine. Not that all, the techniques used in medical imaging has become useful for scientific and industrial research and study as well.

Today there are different types of imaging systems for different clinical purposes. Ranging from the X-ray to the more complicated scanning procedures, medical imaging has different intricacy levels and gives you results in studying and deciding on treatments. Here are a few of the common examples of medical imaging:

• Radiography (X-ray)

Due to its affordability and high resolution, radiography is one of oldest and most common forms of imaging systems today. Here X-rays are sent through the body to check the intactness of the bone structure. Any fracture or damage to the bones is found through radiography.

• Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

The MRI scan, as it is commonly called, is used to detect issues with spine and brain mainly. It uses electro-magnetic fields and radio frequency signals to create an image on a connected computer. An MRI scan is comparatively healthy as it does not involve ionizing radiation and therefore has no related health hazards detected so far. It creates images in 3D blocks so that a more detailed diagnosis of the photographed body part is possible.

• Thermography

Thermography imaging system works on the principle that a cancer affected part of a body would have higher temperature that the remaining parts of the body. Through extremely accurate cameras, this digital imaging system detects these variations in temperature and thus detects presence or probability of cancer.

• Computed Tomography (CT)

Computed Tomography, or CT scan as it is widely known, creates 2D images of a thin section of a body using X-ray technology and a connected computer. Here the patient has a higher risk of health hazards as he or she is surrounded by a ring of detectors that is used to diagnose the disease. It is commonly used for anatomical images and during plastic surgeries.

• Ultrasound

As its name suggests, ultrasound or sonography is an imaging system that uses sound waves of high frequency to emit echoes on a particular part of the body which are then made to an anatomical image that is displayed on a connected video screen. Its common use is to check the growth of a foetus in the mother’s womb and to detect growth in the gall bladder and kidneys.

• Nuclear medicine

Nuclear medicine uses isotopes and radioactive materials to diagnose diseases or growths. It is also known as molecular imaging and is used in oncology, cardiology and neurology divisions of medicine. Activities that are not normal inside the body are detected with gamma rays and cameras. It is used to find tumours in the body.

Today, digital imaging systems are used by doctors across the world to detect and treat diseases. These systems help in the accurate study of maladies and thus help in the correct treatment and speedy recovery of the patient. Yet another boon from the field of science and technology, imaging systems have become ubiquitous and saved the lives of many people.

Every woman waits for this wonderful period in her life and when it actually arrives she is a bundle of nerves, not knowing how she will handle this responsibility. But when your little bundle of joy finally arrives in your arms, then the entire world is witness to the immense love and care the mother showers on her angel!

Being a woman is a boon, we have this God given gift to give birth and nuture a child in our womb for 9 months. These 9 months are a roller coaster ride for every woman and at the end of the journey she bears the sweet fruit of giving birth to another life. Pregnancy is not an easy phase just as your first menses was not when you were going through puberty. The initial months are tough as you have to go through morning sickness, nausea, fatigue, etc. (which all women don’t have to go through compulsorily) Even as you come to terms with this so called change your body is going through, you realise, you have these weird cravings for foods which you never liked earlier. Many women will agree that the hormonal changes that take place within your body are sometimes inexplicable and can get the better of your mood. Mood swings are common and sometimes the spouse is at a loss of words and does not know how to handle things.

The first trimester is usually an uncomfortable feeling for most women and coming to terms with all the changes that take place. Finding a good obstetrician and gynaecologist is a must and trust someone who will take good care of you during these months and ensure a safe and smooth delivery. Many women nowadays who usually go in for a home based delivery even go in for midwives and private nurses. Getting a sonography done at this stage will be advised by your doctor and it will be a pleasure to see a little life form thriving in your womb. Subsequent ultrasounds will be carried out in the later months to ensure that the baby is progressing well and that everything is fine with the growth and development. A supportive and caring spouse is just an added bonus to steer you clear of all the low moments and see to it that you are always happy and contented. The second trimester is a period wherein you come across these strange desires of having weird food cravings and getting up at odd hours in the night for a snack. Also by the 4th or 5th month, you will notice your once toned tummy is now turning into a small and round bump. It’s the most ecstatic feeling and the happiness just reflects on the baby. By the end of the 5th month you will start feeling little tiny movements which will enhance as the months proceed. The third and final trimester is again a little difficult as your size increases and it becomes a tad bit difficult to move around. Walking around in your stilettoes is a strict no-no from the very beginning and at this point it’s best to move around in flip-flops or floaters. This is the time when you need to take maximum care of yourself and your environment should be conducive to the growth of the baby.

DIET AND EXERCISE- Many women think that pregnancy is a period wherein you can eat whatever you want and take it easy. Well it’s just the other way round and you not only have to have a carefully planned balanced diet but also do some moderate exercises to make it easier for your delivery. If stated otherwise by your doctor to take complete bed rest, then it can’t be helped. The more you take care of these things, the easier it is for you and your baby as putting on unwanted pounds is just going to affect you and the baby and make it difficult during your delivery. You can give in to your cravings whenever you want and there are no diet restrictions during this time. There is no fun then if you’re going to be stopped for everything that you consume, but yes, there are certain things that you should lay your hands off. Keep it moderate when it comes to caffeinated and aerated drinks and beverages and alcohol is a complete no, except maybe for a glass of red wine once in a while, as stated by recent research. Avoid eating high fat foods and extra salty food items so that you don’t increase your chances of high blood pressure and too much weight gain. Many women end up with some problem or the other, so it’s best to follow up with your doctor and take care of these situations with proper medication. Going for long walks and a swim once in a while with the permission of your doctor will do you a world of good and keeping yourself busy in and around the house will also be beneficial to you and your baby.

Finally, the world is at your service if you are a first time mom and you will be inundated with all sorts of do’s and don’ts and it is up to you to take in whatever is necessary. Remember that ultimately you are the mother and no one can deny the fact that you are the one to take the final decision. Keep a handy book to write in stuff that you might want to know and get it answered from your doctor or near and dear ones, there are innumerable books available in the market pertaining to pregnancy, childcare and all related topics. So take your pick and increase your knowledge to the best of your advantage. When the d-day finally arrives you surely are going to be a bundle of nerves but at the same time, you can be rest assured that with all the love and care from everyone around you, its going to be absolutely fine. The time when you hold tour bundle of joy is just a feeling which is out of this world and cannot be expressed in words. It’s for you to see and feel now the bond that exists between the mother and child and don’t forget the father at this time as he is also an important aspect in this process and his contribution to the upbringing and nuture of the child is of utmost importance. The family is obviously incomplete without grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins, etc who will shower the new member with loads of love and bless him/her.

So my unfulfilled wish has come true after so many years and at the same time I’m totally committed to my family and have time to spend without feeling guilty about not contributing to the family income.

The health industry has grown exponentially to a very basic reason. The more it grows the better are the healthcare facilities in a country and the better is the healthcare facilities the more is the life expectancy of the people in that region. A higher expectancy of life simply means that there are more elderly people in a country i.e. there are more people to take care of. Hence healthcare training programs become very important.

Even more than doctors there is a bulk requirement for limitedly trained nurses. This is due the fact that the bulk of the care taking of the patients is undertaken by the nurses. Doctors can not take up the day to day services of the patient and these are taken up by the nurses. This has led to a demand for licensed vocational nurses.

A LVN assists the doctors in hospitals and also provides medical aids at homes where long term care taking of elderly people is required. Though a vocational nurse cannot do everything that a registered nurse does but for a lot of care taking jobs such as preparing rooms for new patients and giving the patients bath vocational nurses are required.

Though a vocational nurse can not do specialized jobs still she is licensed for phlebotomy i.e. collection of blood samples, administering general injections and taking blood pressures. Most vocational nurses take up specializations in their fields of liking after a few years of experience.

A job of a LVN is very promising as they receive high pays than people employed in other sectors with the same skills and generally also receive all other privileges that other trained medical workers receive. Moreover there is always a scope of earning more. In some cases astonishingly vocational nurses earn even more than RN’s.

Some vocational nurses may also receive specialization in the technical fields such as ultrasound sonography. This increases their pays by leaps and bounds. After getting any such specialization they easily reduce their workloads of taking care of patients and still earn much more.

This also provides them with chances to receive accreditation of a registered nurse very easily just on the basis of a few years of experience and without any further training. Hence vocational nursing has today become a very much in demand and also a very respectable job. This has led to increase in competition as well. Hence getting a degree from a recognized school is extremely important.

Enroll for LVN programs at the top private vocational LVN schools in California.
